Myofunctional Therapy Northwest

Correcting Oral Function
To Improve Sleep and Breathing
Chelsea is the owner of Myofunctional Therapy Northwest. After 20 years of practicing as a registered dental hygienist, she began seeking answers to the chronic patterns and dysfunction she frequently observed in the mouth but felt were not fully addressed through traditional care. This search led her to myofunctional therapy, where she discovered a deeper understanding of the root causes behind many oral and breathing-related issues.
Chelsea is passionate about helping patients improve breathing, oral function, and long-term wellness through a personalized, whole-body approach. As a proud mother of two and a lover of sunshine and the outdoors, she is deeply committed to helping families build healthier foundations for life.
What is myofunctional therapy?
Myofunctional therapy is a specialized program of exercises that retrains the muscles of the tongue, lips, and face to function properly. These muscles play an important role in breathing, chewing, swallowing, speaking, and proper oral and facial development. When these patterns are not functioning correctly, they can contribute to issues such as mouth breathing, tongue thrust, sleep-disordered breathing, orthodontic relapse, and jaw discomfort.
Through personalized exercises and habit retraining, myofunctional therapy helps improve muscle coordination and promote healthy breathing patterns, supporting better oral function, sleep, and overall wellness.

Who Can Benefit From Myofunctional Therapy?
Myofunctional therapy can benefit both children and adults who experience challenges with breathing, oral function, sleep, or oral habits. Because the muscles of the tongue, lips, and face influence many aspects of health, retraining these patterns can support improvements in breathing, sleep quality, orthodontic stability, and overall wellness.
Many patients are referred by dentists, orthodontists, airway specialists, or sleep providers, but anyone experiencing symptoms related to oral dysfunction may benefit from an evaluation.
Signs You or Your Child May Benefit
You or your child may benefit from myofunctional therapy if you notice:
• Mouth breathing during the day or night
• Snoring or restless sleep
• Tongue thrust when swallowing
• Thumb sucking, prolonged pacifier use, or oral habits
• Difficulty keeping lips closed at rest
• Crowded teeth or orthodontic relapse
• Frequent dry mouth or bad breath
• Jaw tension, clenching, or grinding
• Speech challenges related to tongue placement
• Dark circles under the eyes or chronic fatigue in children
If any of these signs are present, a myofunctional evaluation can help determine whether muscle patterns of the mouth and airway may be contributing.
